Undeniable the heart of the island …the tiny intimate church of the Holy Mary of the Immaculate Conception.

inis meáib chapel entrance

Entrance to the Chapel with crucifix above door

A place where at any time of the day a warm welcome is awaiting  you. A lovely place to go into and sit down for a couple of minutes while you feel saturated by a sense of an almost everlasting serenity which is tenderly kept between the four walls of this chapel. Here you can light a candle for a loved one and have a moment of reflection. At various moments during daytime you can enjoy the different ways the sun falls through the stained glass windows and enlightens the representations . And when you happen to look above you at the ceiling the beautifully carved beams out of wood have got a tender and intense shine as if they have been polished lately…

The Altar

The church is erected in 1939. It replaced the former church of the 15th century. Fortunately a couple of attributes of the old church found a place in or around the new one. The baptismal font  in the back of the church e.g. and the font for the Holy water and the bell tower and of course the touching simple crucifix above the entrance. The glass stained windows have been fabricated at the studio of Harry Clarke and the altar has been created by James Pearse, the father of  Pádraig Pearse who lead the Easter rising in 1916.
