Aran Islands Limerick competition. Winner announced.

Aran Archaeology: Wedge Tombs

In my last post I shared some of the myths associated with Aran archaeology. Now I’d like to share some of modern archaeological findings, which are equally as fascinating.

I came across this great book last year, The Burren and the Aran Islands, by Professor Carleton Jones of NUI Galway. Professor Jones was gracious enough to meet with me last summer when I stopped in Galway en route to Inis Mor. The book and my conversation with him about the archaeology of the Aran Islands were quite enlightening, and greatly enriched my enjoyment of visiting the Aran Islands.

Let’s start at the very beginning, with the oldest archaeological findings on Aran: Wedge Tombs.
