With 3 companies competing for business at Doolin pier prices are as low as they’ve ever been. All companies are keen to have you book on line so that you don’t shop around on the pier. A phone survey that we carried out last week resulted in all 3 companies advising us to book online.

Certainly booking online does represent great value at the moment but if you go to the pier you may just get a better deal on the day. Be wary of stopping at offices on the way to Doolin pier.

Travel times from Doolin to the islands are:

  • Inis Óirr (Inisheer) 30 minutes.
  • Inis Meáin (Inishmaan) 40 minutes.
  • Inis Mór (Inishmore) 90 minutes. (Approx)

New hope for critics of Doolin pier plan

A SECOND CHANCE for opponents of development at Doolin pier has opened up with the announcement that further consideration has to be given to the granting of a foreshore licence for the €6 million project.

Clare County Council has been asked to relodge plans for the foreshore licence for the contentious development with the Department of the Environment.

Last month, in the face of opposition in particular from surfers, councillors unanimously gave their approval for the pier, which will be particularly important for access to the Aran Islands.

Surfers told the council that the pier plan would destroy world-class waves at Doolin, including the Crab Island wave, ranked as one of the best in the country.

The council official charged with leading the project, Tom Tiernan, said yesterday: “The application is practically the same as the one that was submitted in mid-2010.

“Notwithstanding same, the department advised us in February 2011, that, to be procedurally correct, it would be appropriate to submit an amended application to reflect the fact that the proposed pier location had changed.

“This was done in mid-February but, because of a minor error within the application form, we were requested to resubmit it – this was done on March 3th.

“As I understand it, this made no difference in practical terms as it didn’t delay the department’s examination of the application.”

He added: “The only change of any significance relates to the relocation of the proposed pier by 25m when compared with the original application. This, in turn, resulted in very minor changes to supporting reports submitted with the application.”

Mr Tiernan said he was confident construction work would begin this year, with the project expected to be complete next year.

Good news for Doolin tourism. The development at Doolin pier in Co. Clare to go ahead at last. This will hugely improve ferry access to the Aran Islands from Doolin.

CONTENTIOUS PLANS to construct a €6 million pier at Doolin yesterday received the unanimous approval of Clare’s councillors in spite of concerns expressed by surfers.

At the council’s March meeting yesterday, councillors gave the plan their endorsement after Cllr Richard Nagle (FF) said: “The new pier is imperative for the economic life of north Clare, and it should proceed without delay.”

County manager Tom Coughlan recommended that conditional permission be granted for the proposal, which acts at the Clare gateway to the Aran Islands.

However, the Irish Surfing Association told the council that the proposal would destroy the Crab Island and Doolin Point waves “which have been surfed for decades and are world renowned”.

Fáilte Ireland supported the concerns of surfers, requesting the council to re-examine the existing proposal to ensure that the plan could proceed without compromising the area for surfers.

The stance of Fáilte Ireland placed it at odds with local tourism interests who lodged a submission with 200 signatures in support of the pier plan.

The Doolin-based supporters of the pier took up most of the available seating in the public gallery at yesterday’s meeting, with some holding up signs saying “Support Doolin Pier”.

Cllr Martin Conway (FG) said the new pier would be “a major cog in Clare tourism”.

The council official charged with leading the project, Tom Tiernan, said construction work could begin within four to six months.

There is no recourse to An Bord Pleanála for third parties.
