“The sort of yearning I feel towards those lonely rocks is indescribably acute….yet the islands are fading already and I can hardly realize that the smell of the seaweed and the drone of the Atlantic are still moving round them.”- J.M. Synge, The Aran Islands.
Greetings blogosphere! I’m Emily Herzlin. I’m a freelance writer in New York, and I’m thrilled to contribute to the Aran Islands blog. I genuinely love the Aran Islands, and have visited twice: once in November 2007 for a few days, and again in the summer of 2010 for a month. I’m returning again for another month this upcoming summer, and I cannot wait to return.
As a writer, Aran has been intensely inspirational to me – from the literature to the history to the landscape – and I’m looking forward to sharing my research, experiences, and Aran-inspired writing with this online community.
My initial interest in Aran was sparked six years ago when I read a play called “Riders to the Sea” by the Irish playwright John Millington Synge…
