Inis Meain (Inishmaan) Co-Op in difficulty. Water turned off

Inis-Meain. Water has been turned off. Airport is closed.

The Co-Op on Inishmaan is in financial difficulty and can’t pay it’s staff to run the airstrip or the desalination plant. Water has been cut of and the Airport is closed.

Local business interests have appealed to the  Siptu workers union to get involved in finding an urgent solution. Tourists on the island this morning couldn’t  have showers and only bottled water is available.

At the height of the tourist season up to 400 people could inhabit the island which is normally home to about 170.

Hopefully a solution can be found.

Aran Islands Water Shortages

Severe Water shortage on the Aran islands

Galway County Council are preparing to ship thousands of gallons of water to the Aran islands of Inishmore and Inisheer.

With almost no rain since Christmas, water supplies have dwindled. Supplies are now been cut off twice daily. It is hoped that it will be possible to ship enough water to alleviate the immediate shortage but really a long term solution is needed to this problem. So while most of the country is enjoying sunshine , on the Aran Islands they’re doing rain dances.
